Cake, Ice Cream, beer, the 24 hour drive thru at McDonalds…it all sounds so good! However, these are all contributing factors to the American Obesity Epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1/3 (35.7%) of U.S adults are currently obese. This obesity increases chances for heart attack, stroke, type-2 diabetes, and cancer. Unfortunately, American eating habits and American obesity have also spread to their pets. Actually, pets are overweight at an even higher rate than humans! The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention found that 52.5 percent of dogs and 58.3 percent of cats are overweight. This is because pet owners often over feed their pets. By utilizing an automatic pet feeder that rations your pets eating and only dispenses food at certain times, you can help your pet to be healthy enough to enjoy a long, happy life.
Some dogs can be difficult to walk on a leash. We have all heard it once before; the old “Hey, who’s walking who?” line from our neighbor, The Comedian. Sadly, some dog owners think that the solution to their dog walking problem is a “choker chain.” According to some dog trainers and veterinarians, choker chains should not be considered as an option for training your dog for walks.
Choker chains can cause irreversible injuries to your pooch and many times they fail to work properly as a behavioral tool. The only thing a choker chain asserts is that the owner is stronger and thus more dominant than the dog by hurting it. However more modern training methods show us that positive encouragement training is far more effective. To read more about more human dog collars and leashes, Click Here.
Recently the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) re-released a Consumer Update about its views on keeping real bones out of doggie mouths. According to the FDA, feeding your pet a bone is unsafe and dramatically increases the chances for an unwanted trip to the veterinarian. Choking, mouth injuries and bacterial infections have all been associated with dogs whose owners give bones from the dinner plate.
However, just because you shouldn’t give Fido a ham bone after Easter dinner doesn’t mean he can’t be a happy hound. There are lots of bone-like products which are great to chew on. To learn about alternatives to bones, Click Here.
In the 80s, Pee Wee Mania swept across the enchanted masses of the United States. The Pee Wee Herman character (played by late night theatre attendee Paul Reubens) had his own Emmy nominated television show, starred in lucrative, cult classic motion pictures, and even had his own doll! Pee Wee’s comedy was original and different, and so were his ideas. In a famous scene from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, the audience is introduced to an automatic breakfast and dog food dispenser that Pee Wee uses to make his morning go a little smoother. At the time, the concept seemed eccentric and wacky, but now, automatic pet feeders are extremely popular across the globe. That’s because these popular automatic pet feeders are convenient, reliable, and sure to make your life that much easier. Check out more here…
All across the country, there are dog leash laws that have been put in place to keep people and their pooches safe. These laws are often known as “Running at Large Statutes.” Some laws are handed down by the state government, while others are handled by the local governments, such as towns, municipalities, boroughs, and cities.
As is often the case (damn traffic laws), these laws are different in every state. Some states have no restrictions, some have moderate restrictions, and others have very strict laws. Then, there are areas that are riddled with controversy. Some dog leash laws have provoked citizens to come out publicly and berate the laws. The important thing for you is to know your area’s laws and make sure you and your pup have a leash. Check out more here…
It’s true that some dogs were born to take on the cold weather (Siberian Husky, German Shepherd, etc.), but most dogs need some extra security. Dogs with shorter hair, puppies, and older dogs are all very susceptible to illnesses and injuries that are caused by the cold.
As owners, it’s our job to protect our pooches. The best way to do this is with dog clothing that will help to bundle them up. Check out more here at Pet Street Mall.
Fleas and ticks are the stuff of nightmares. These tiny vampires live off the blood of our pets and – if they get the chance – our blood too. If that wasn’t bad enough ticks and bugs spread harmful diseases such as lyme disease.
Needless to say eradicating fleas and ticks as quickly as possible is very important to the health of your pets and your family, but first you have to find them and determine whether it’s fleas or ticks your pet has picked up.
How do you find these pesky parasites and identify which is which so you can control them? Find out with our guide to the difference between fleas and ticks…
Every puppy goes through a teething phase. Trying to avoid this problem or not paying attention to it could lead to a home that is in complete shambles. Couch cushions will be chewed up, shoes will be annihilated, and carpets will be ripped apart.
In addition to your house falling apart, your puppy could also face some serious danger if he isn’t given the proper stimulation. When puppies are teething, they will put just about anything in their mouth, and sometimes, this leads to them ingesting harmful items. The best way to prevent this from happening is to give your dog the proper chew toys. Chew toys will keep him stimulated and prevent him from ruining the house and will keep him safe and healthy. But, what toys are the best??
Providing your dog with a nice dog house is a worthwhile investment. It helps your pup stay happy by giving him a comfortable, familiar place to sleep. Also, these homes are great because they help your pup stay healthy by protecting him from the outdoor elements. Today, there are many different types of dog houses out there. Some are outrageous (people are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars), some are famous (these can be great examples of what a dog house should be), and some are charming and just right. Check out our article and take a look at today’s most famous, charming, and outrageous dog houses.
Believe it or not, one of the most common problems that a dog faces is boredom. Boredom strikes thousands of dogs across the country. This might sound funny and irrelevant, but some dogs are in such lack of stimulation that it is borderline abuse. Extreme boredom can lead to anxiety, depression, lethargy, and stress.
As a dog owner, there’s nothing worse than seeing our pups struggle with boredom. After all, dogs are another member of the family, and they need the same type of love and support as a family member. The best way to help a pup avoid boredom and its ugly side effects is to provide him with stimulation. There are a number of ways to do this, but none better than providing him a fun supply of dog toys.
